it’s chinese – “lu ro fan (魯肉飯)” – popular in Taiwan and elsewhere – i’m guessing this is either hong kong or singapore (judging by the price). the pork is stewed for a long time in a pot and then served over white rice – it’s a cheap dish in Taiwan (about 30nt/US$1) and although quite good it smells a little like cat food.

To deep-fry ice-cream, first you freeze it, then wrap it in sliver-thin slices of stale sponge cake and freeze it again seriously hard, then dip it in batter then fry it quickly in very hot oil, so the batter cooks before the ice-cream starts to melt.
