FIRST!
You just broke that rule
Arpinge is a hamlet between Paddlesworth and Newington, Shepway to the west of Folkestone in Kent, England. It consists of three working farms, three now converted to residential use and a further four houses. The name probably originates from the Old English ‘eorpa’ (dark-skinned (person)) and ‘inge’ (a settlement). There is no church as it falls within the ecclesiastical parish of Newington-next-Hythe. There are no shops and the nearest pub is the ‘Cat and Custard Pot’ in Paddlesworth.
*strikes borofix with a bat*
When are you going to stop hitting people with furry animals, SS?
*hits jinxed over head with bat*
That will be the last time. *hits SS with a aluminum bat*
*drops wad of cash on jinxed*
*hits SS with a 10-megaton thermonuclear warhead*
*wonders how much cash he’ll drop on me*
You just burned all his cash, so nothing.
No, thanks, man. I don’t save roaches any more.
SS, pleeze not be abusing small furry creatures. kthx
I suppose being moonstruck won’t happen here, either.
Atention: do not make dreadful pun, and you not be clonked.
This sounds like one of those weird Buddhist monk training places where the teacher sneaks up and whacks you if you’re snoozing or not yet sufficiently enlightened.
That’s actually not at all weird for Zen monasteries, and is in fact commonplace. The striker is actually an honored teacher, and the student is supposed to express thanks for the hit. It has to do with the difference between “ordinary” meditation and zazen. In “ordinary” meditation, e.g. in the yogic tradition, you basically float away from physical reality on a cloud of bliss, and if you do it really well, you wouldn’t even notice the hit. In zazen, one keeps one’s senses all alert and focused, but quiet the mind so that you feel the hit, and even the “ouch,” but it does not disturb you at all. That is why I believe the mental techniques of Zen have more utility in everyday life, because you can more easily bring that serenity into the real world. So while I do conventional yogic physical practices, my meditation practice is much more like zazen, that is, zen sitting. I would NEVER try to do a yogic meditation or chant while driving, for example (I’d forget I was driving!), but long-distance car trips are a wonderful time to do long sessions of zazen (I’m JUST driving!). But I think zazen is an advanced technique, and I usually don’t advise people to start with it. Yogic meditation is easier and more immediately rewarding. I only became capable of real zazen after about 25 years of meditation.
Still don’t dig it. I’m ok with this level.
Oh, I doubt if I’d care for it, or be able to be serene when being whacked, but it is partly a cultural difference as well. Westerners who go for sesshin at Zen monasteries in Japan are often given signs saying, well, “Attention: Not be struck.”
Sounds very interesting! I’ll have to try it sometime, if I could ever quiet my thoughts…
It takes lots of practice. LOTS.
I can imagine!
I’d be more concerned about hitting my head. Looks like a staircase for short people.
The local hardware store has vivid black and red safety signs with “Watch Your Head” printed on them. I get a giggle every time.
Oddly, they are kept near the indoor growing systems…
Ah! Watch your head- of lettuce, as it grows.
And if love envflops you, you might well develop head trees.
No used matches beyond this sign.
It said strike anywhere, but only the little round part lights.
I think they’re just trying to keep labor unions out of Tibet.
Struck? By what? Is Jack the Ripper hiding somewhere???
So much more picturesque than “Mind your head”– anyone over 5’2″ WATCH OUT!!!!! Saw similarly low clearances in Japan, I didn’t have to duck.
So…. I take it they have no unions then.
