Foul is ground beans, its somewhat of a paste/sauce. It is yellow in color, kind of a weird texture, but tastes really good. Usually you put it on toast or Arabic bread.

What you describe sounds like hommous (spellings vary). There must be heaps of different recipes on the interwebs. Keep trying them till you find the one you like.
My fave contains chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, garlic & lemon juice, in descending order of quantity.
