yea, i was in tokyo this summer and saw those signs everywhere and some people there will bump into you like u dirt, so its possible that is what they mean… or molesting, apparently there is a huge rape problem there… either one

I was ON this street a few weeks ago and tout could NEVER mean no touching. You are jam packed, wall to wall with bodies.. So funny that I am not the only one who snapped a pic of this stoopid sign!

As the previous poster commented, “tout” is an old British word for somebody soliciting business on the street. Nowadays it is a term mostly associated with what Americans call scalpers… in the UK they are known as ticket touts.

Not to be a buzzkill, but touting is showing tourists around for money, so the sign essentially only has a typo in the word smoking. The picture for no touts actually makes sense.

In Japan tout refers specifically to trying to direct people to your business, usually a restaurant, bar, hostess club, etc.
You can stand out side your shop’s door and call people in, but lots of places won’t let you just wander around the neighborhood and do it.
If you’re a Westerner and you visit Shijuku at night, the touts will descend on you like vultures on a fresh kill. But at least you can smork.

I thought “tout” meant touch. No touching people on the street. Especially strangers. You can see (if you want to) that the person doing the touting isn’t close to the “toutee”. Just sort of tapping on the shoulder with invisible fingers.
