  1. JohnB says:

    Can I at least smonk?

  2. JohnB says:

Perhaps that third one is supposed to be, “No taut,” in which case you are being asked to disembark from the Titan Uranus.

  3. Simiantoastcrunch says:

What’s funny is that the difficult words (shoplifting & littering) they got right.

Maybe for those they touted the dictionary.

  4. PoodleGroomer says:

I need to tout a smork before we go online reading the comics on the intertubes.

  5. JohnB says:

From the picture it looks like they’re prohibiting armed robbery, which would go along with the fourth prohibition. But I can’t see a path from there to “tout.” Perhaps they are forbidding “solicitation,” in one sense or another.

  6. Lawlin' says:

No from the picture it looks like the figure is pointing at the other figure and yelling, “NO SOUP FOR YOU!”

    • KinkyTom says:

lol or Maybe it’s saying No soup Nazis xD

    • KinkyTom says:

Comic & Internet Cafe Alpha or C.I.C.A. sounds like some sort of top secret military project involving Specially trained Geeks and Nerds who are sent in as secret agents to foil the evil plans of Cheezburger loving lolcats…

Sounds like the next Disney movie xP

  7. yay says:

A Comic & Internet Cafe Alpha? I’m totally there.

  8. develish1 says:

    but I wanna smork!

  9. Shagsbeard says:

Looks to me like “tout”ing is panhandling, or begging.

    • JohnB says:

Which would be one of the forms of “solicitation” I speculated about before. There are at least two more…

      • hollyr57 says:

I thought “tout” meant touch. No touching people on the street. Especially strangers. You can see (if you want to) that the person doing the touting isn’t close to the “toutee”. Just sort of tapping on the shoulder with invisible fingers.

        • Xerxes says:

Never been to Tokyo, huh? When crossing the street, they’ll bump shoulders into you like you never existed.

          • Forum says:

yea, i was in tokyo this summer and saw those signs everywhere and some people there will bump into you like u dirt, so its possible that is what they mean… or molesting, apparently there is a huge rape problem there… either one

  10. rexifelis says:

tout? it almost looks like the image is one person touching another? no touchey! do not touch the king’s (that is me) feet!

  11. cipher_nemo says:

The “no tout” still has us scratching our heads. No poking, no touching, no dusty off other peoples’ shoulders? Hmmm.

  12. JTB says:

I think it means “No Touch” or “No Touching.” You know how foreign men can get while riding on subways and buses and such! If I remember correctly, somewhere in China, they started a women-only subway because women were complaining about being fondled by men while riding on the subway or train.

  13. Svidrir says:

“Tout” means “everything”, in French… maybe a clue ?

  14. saywhat says:

I need a smork. Like now.

  15. tehexile says:

    no trout?

  16. Big Jim says:

I usually only smork after touting, so I guess i’d be ok there…

  17. Pingo T Best says:

    smorking…?

Alright, who let Coach Z make the sign?

  18. insane says:

    *smorks*

  19. Kara says:

Touting is soliciting someone to buy something from you, eg. “Hey Mister, you want to buy a watch?” It’s actually an English word!!

    • kaleymuffin says:

WOW you are right! how are you the only person to know this? well, besides everyone in japan.

    • Hebime says:

In Japan tout refers specifically to trying to direct people to your business, usually a restaurant, bar, hostess club, etc.
You can stand out side your shop’s door and call people in, but lots of places won’t let you just wander around the neighborhood and do it.
If you’re a Westerner and you visit Shijuku at night, the touts will descend on you like vultures on a fresh kill. But at least you can smork.

    • MyChemicalApocalypse says:

      OMG IT’S A SMART PERSON

  20. bluejade says:

tout?? to me, it looks like you can’t play tag… oh noez!

  21. bodo says:

You Too Can Quit Smorking Now…

  22. kaleymuffin says:

If I’m not allowed to shoplift then i’m just cutting straight to the pillaging.

  23. Piranha says:

I was there and I took the exact same picture. :D Somebody was obviously in Harajuku, Tokyo

  24. exacry says:

Wuts Dat??, I Raff I Ruse

  25. cobrasnakenecktie says:

HA I thought perhaps by the word ‘tout’ it may have meant taunt…oh dang…

    • sombredanlingbadingalampalama says:

i think so too, it looks like skinny stick man pointing at fat stick man.

      • hollyr57 says:

Isn’t that always the way? Skinny stick women always point at fat stick women too! BTW, trying to say your screen name out loud has sprained my mouth!

  26. purdlemeow says:

No smorking, no touting, no littering, AND no shoplifting? Might as well stay inside then, they’ve taken away all the outside entertainment possibilities! Yep, Tokyo just got crossed off MY travel list!

    • JohnB says:

Yeah, I know what you mean. I just love to tout my smork, after I’ve shoplifted some litter. That’s a day well done.

  27. Joe says:

Not to be a buzzkill, but touting is showing tourists around for money, so the sign essentially only has a typo in the word smoking. The picture for no touts actually makes sense.

  28. ominominomicon says:

maybe no touching? thats my best guess

  29. Kyuzo Miyamoto says:

hahaa, i was gonna send a photo of this in to one of these sites too! they’re all over Harajuku :)
    i couldn’t get a clear photo sadly :(

  30. dood says:

engrish poop where theres smork they tout back

  31. tafkap68 says:

As the previous poster commented, “tout” is an old British word for somebody soliciting business on the street. Nowadays it is a term mostly associated with what Americans call scalpers… in the UK they are known as ticket touts.

    • badrhino04 says:

i was on the street, you are right, there were some Jamaican guys trying to lure you away into a back alley to sell you illegal/stolen wares

  32. Tamazon says:

I was ON this street a few weeks ago and tout could NEVER mean no touching. You are jam packed, wall to wall with bodies.. So funny that I am not the only one who snapped a pic of this stoopid sign!

  33. IKilledKenny says:

    SMORKIN’ LABBIT

  34. Name are insert here says:

Hi, im troll and I would enjoy much point out that the signs not are spelled as much correctly as proper.
