I was worried that all that real men do is not eat quiche. Now we know that they can bend and erect according to circumstances. So they can bow, pick up something off the floor – no, that one can’t be right! My beloved can’t pick things up off the floor and he’s a man.
I am (you’ll have to take my word for it, I suppose) a real man, and I not only pick up things lying on the floor (which, since I have a ten-year-old daughter, are approximately 55% hair things, 25% socks (rarely accompanied by a mate) underwear or various other clothing, 15% art materials of various sorts, and the rest mostly unidentifiable), but have this nasty habit of not dropping things on the floor in the first place. One can find occasional articles of clothing atop my dresser, usually ones I intend on wearing further later in the day, but I happen to believe the only things that really belong on the floor are furniture, feet, and carpets, although I have despaired of convincing my daughter that she does not also belong there, since it places her in so much closer proximity to her clothing, hair things, and art implements, any of which she might happen to need on a moment’s notice.
No insult intended John – just a riff on my own real man. All in fun. I can straighten the livingroom in the morning and by the time I get home from work it looks like the Paper Dragon has urped all over the house. But even if he can’t pick up things off the floor, he can bend according to circumstances – just haven’t figured those out yet.
No offense taken. I just like to have fun upsetting women’s expectations of men, since I so often do. It took my current wife several years to learn that she could leave me in the kitchen unsupervised without danger of anything other than a good meal or a clean kitchen.
