That’s a hard one (as the actress said to the Bishop). “Fruit flies when the time is ripe” doesn’t seem to work.
Anyone who gets fun out of timing flies probably needs to have fruit thrown at them, if only to add zest to their life.

That was actually my initial hypothesis, that the rate of apparent time passage was directly proportional to the age of the subject. However, having accumulated quite a few years now, I think that it may be proportional to the square of the age, so that for a 20-year-old, time passes FOUR times faster than a 10-year-old.

When in grad school (got my doctorate in ’91) I used the old Unix program called pic to generate simple diagrams. You could label objects as 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so forth and then specify lines or arcs or whatnot to be drawn between them. Pic was written so that it didn’t (probably still doesn’t) care about the suffixes, so I usually used 1th, 2th, 3nd, 4st and so on. Oneth, twoth, threend…

I’ve noticed that too, of course, and I wonder if it’s a matter of proportion? When you are say, five years old, a year is one fifth of your life and consequently you perceive it to be a very long time. When you are fifty, it’s one tenth of your life and so it seems to go a lot faster. About the only thing I’ve found to slow my perception of time down is to be very mindful of what I do, and take care to pay close attention to everything going on around me. That helps to some extent but not totally.

Not to long ago I watched a program on this very thing on the Science Channel. The series was called, appropriately enough, “Time” and the specific episode was “Counting Minutes” (I did have to look this up- my memory’s good but not that damn good). Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku is/was the host. The quick answer to your question is “yes”. The experiment they did on the program was to go out onto city streets and stop people of all ages and get them to count out a minute, or what they thought was a minute. Younger people on average counted out a minute that was a few seconds faster than an actual minute, older people were a few seconds slower. I think this particular video is available on the Science Channel website. This series deals with how time works as defined by Einstein and Relativity. Very interesting. Plus, I’ve noticed unfortunately, that Major Depression also slows thing down, and when the illness kicks in it gives me insight into how it must be for someone twice my age- frustrating would be a good word. Something that used to take you 15 minutes to do takes you an hour and a half…. frustrating, discouraging, and doesn’t help the depression.

I have always been interested in people’s sense of the rate that time passes and actually hoped to do some research on that, but so far never have. It is universally reported that as we get older, time seems to go faster and faster. There is, though, one thing that seems to slow it down, and that is having children.
