I agree with the people who say this is not really an engrish fail. As someone pointed out already, there’s a reason the symbol for the zodiac sign of Cancer is the crab. The picture above is of the local commuter trains in my city, Mumbai. Since the trains here are overcrowded, the railways have tried to provide this special seating for people who cannot risk getting shoved or squished. And since many people are illiterate, it’s necessary to have symbols along with words. They print symbols on ballots, too.
Since there is still a high level of illiteracy in India, a lot of signs have pictures to help those who can’t read Hindi, let alone English. So actually, this isn’t a fail at all.
If you’re not educated enough to read, it is entirely likely that you won’t know that a crab is a symbol for ‘cancer’. Besides, if your cancer looks like THAT, you probably don’t have very long anyway…
That sign is from Mumbai’s commuter trains. If you’re not educated enough to read, you can still suffer from cancer. If so, you can get free treatment at the Tata Memorial hospital. If you do that, you will soon become familiar with the symbol for cancer. People who can’t read do understand that a cross is a sign for medical help, a cigarette with a slash is a “no smoking” sign, etc.
The Hindi term for cancer is also the same as the Hindi for crab. The amusingness, I believe, comes in that they use the astrological sign for the disease (which I haven’t seen done there before)… only people born in a certain month can park here! (Which actually I would find quite believable in astrology-obsessed India…)
I’m a Leo who’s going to stride right in there if I need to go, regardless of whether I’m supposed to or not. After all, isn’t that a what being a Leo is all about? But if you’re putting the kettle on, I’ll have tea, ta.
Not Engrish…this site has gotten so watered down. The person who submitted this pic AND the people voting for have just proven how little they know of English themselves. “Cancer” means “crab”… cancer patients have had symptoms resembling the shape of crabs…hence they called the decease “cancer”.
‘cancer patients have had symptoms resembling the shape of crabs…hence they called the decease “cancer” ‘
Disease, not decease. Spelling, and therefore meaning, fail.
“The person who submitted this … have proved just how little they know of English themselves.”
Pot, meet Kettle.
I recall from a few years ago a version of a web page about German tourists in the U. S. eating crab at crab restaurants. This version had been put through Babelfish or the like (probably not by the person who wrote it) and translated mechanically from German to English. Now, the translator program was clearly geared more to technical and medical language than to general language, so that the German word “Krebs” was always translated not as “crab” but as “cancer.” Descriptions of the Germans enthusiastically tucking in to just-steamed cancers caught fresh earlier that day, of the rustic decor of the cancer-shack restaurants…
I laughed too- not at the “Engrish” but at the visual. What got me is that the crab has two extra legs that look kinda like human legs, which makes it creepy.
FURST BRUV
Crab patients? :0
People suffering from crabs..? XD
Handicapped crabs with cancer, can’t you read?
Nope. :c
2 languages
I lol’d
I cried… laughing!
Aquarians have to wait in line.
As an Aquarian, I must protest. That’s discrimination!
Likewise! No respect (or medical care) for the rest of the zodiac, humpf!
My bull stars stop on your water stars! Hah!

As a pisces, and therefore two fish at once, I hereby declare that I and all others of my sign get to drink twice as much as everybody else.
So there.
*hiccup*
hear! hear!
as a Sag, i get to piss in the aquerians pool!
this is not total failure, as the name for “cancer” (disease) comes from Latin name for “crab” — see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer#History
I’ve seen the “cancer” the crab symbol used to indicate cancer before. I don’t think it’s an engrish fail.

Just because they can’t read doesn’t mean they are stupid.

Scorpios, however, can sit wherever they want.
What about Leo’s?
Can we have coffee while we wait?
I’m a Leo who’s going to stride right in there if I need to go, regardless of whether I’m supposed to or not. After all, isn’t that a what being a Leo is all about? But if you’re putting the kettle on, I’ll have tea, ta.

The visual is actually quite clever…I mean I laughed…but actually its pretty clever.

creepy…or divine. Have you seen how many limbs Hindu deities have?
It’s not exactly Engrish. It’s just… weird.
Libras have a bad HMO; they have to park at the morgue down the street!
Space reserved for the deformed man and giant enemy crab.
