The very oddness that makes it difficult to learn seems to make it more fault-tolerant.
I know that for a lot of these Engrish signs, the meaning is quite clear if you just think about some synonyms of the odd-looking words.

There are fake “sleeping” cats and dogs that actually look like they are breathing. My dad got one just to mess with his grandkids (not my kids) and make them be quiet and if you push on their stomach it will mess up the air pump that makes them “breath.”
It was so funny when the kids found out it was fake.
