This is absolutely not Engrish. The Octopus is a card which you swipe at electronic readers to pay for anything from parking to public transport in Hong Kong. In fact, many consider it a symbol for Hong Kong efficiency and technological innovation.

Funny that this has been taken completely out of its context, and that people so easily jump to conclusions. Maybe try not to automatically assume that something is Engrish when you can’t immediately understand the English, due to limited knowledge of the way things work in other countries.

Also, if you know Chinese, you’ll understand why it’s called an “Octopus” card. An Octopus has many tentacles, and is used as a symbol for interconnectedness and expansiveness — appropriate since the first function of the Octopus was to pay for public transport. Very apt, and unfortunately, for those who like to assert their linguistic superiority by laughing at other people’s English, which in this case turns out to be entirely correct, not very funny.

This is a fail since the sign is correct as octopus means Octopus cards and is used in a way like credit cards.

actually, if u read what it says on its website, u’ll find that paying HK$120 for an Octopus card includes HK$50… Meaning you are paying HK$70 for the card and putting the rest inside it. I know cuz I live in Hong Kong and actually have a card.

this sign actually makes perfect sens as in this context it’s referring to an octopus card – used to pay for the mtr, buses, some macdonalds, 7-11′s, etc in hong kong.

Now I feel bad for the out-of-town guy in Hong Kong who tries to board the train with an actual octopus in his pocket. When the ticket worker asks him to present his octopus, he will be mystified when she promptly freaks out. After all, she wanted to see the #$%%^ thing.
