First on a not-Engrish. This is more of a fail than a translation error. And, as all of the Cinncinati people keep ranting about- it’s an actual food. Though, I’m from the Midwest, and I’ve never heard of it before.

This site has pretty much petered out. I mean this, the Gangsta Coloring Book, etc are not Engrish. These were used for amusement; they knew exactly what the “3-way” would imply, its for attention. I’m kinda thinking this board was a waste of time.

For those of you NOT from the midwest, ‘three way’ describes a style of midwestern ‘chili,’ to use the term loosely. In the midwest, chili is more of a meat sauce, not to spicy, sometimes with cinnamon in it. A three way is this so-called ‘chili’ on top of spaghetti, topped with grated cheese. I will now pause a moment for my fellow southwesterners to stop laughing. Yes, seriously, they put cinnamon and chili powder in spaghetti sauce, throw it on top of some noodles, top it with cheese, and call it chili. It is not chili, but surprisingly, it is delicious.

Can anyone NOT from Cincy verify that this is a “midwestern” food? I’ve never seen it outside Cincinnati.
Well, that depends on what you mean by “not Cincy.” I mean, Skyline has had restaurants as far away as Bowling Green, OH which is just south of Toledo (although the one here closed about a year ago because there weren’t enough of us SW Ohio folks to keep it afloat apparently). And I know of at least one Gold Star as far South as Lexington.
So, the general Cincinnati area, radiating out for a few hundred miles, but yes, it is certainly not common throughout the entire Midwest.

Not sure about the cinnamon in chili but I know a number of people who put it in lasagna, so I’m not surprised to see it.
Actually, eating a cinnamon roll with your chili is absolutely delicious.
I’d be curious what it’s like in the chili and on top of spaghetti though.
No one in Cincinnati in any way considers Cinci chili the same thing as chili chili.
Cincinnati chili is of Greek origin, and is only related to southwestern chili in that both have beef in it and they are roughly the same color. And thick-soupy.
You can also have a 4-way and a 5-way, if you’re a real hedonist (beans & onions).

Same. I see no problem with this sign. My husband, however, is not from Cincy and when we were dating I remember his reaction the first time I told him I missed having GSC 3-ways.
Kinda like when I told my now-wife (who was not from the New England-that-borders Quebec) that I wanted to drive to Canada for some poutine.
(She first thought it was some variant of “Poontang”. It’s french fries, cheddar cheese curds, and brown gravy: a French-Canadian specialty.)

I from Germany, and this is funny. Very funny, this site is not funny most of the time but now that you have America joke, you CANT TAKE IT. What happened to laugh because its funny? I’m laughing hahahahahahaahahahahaha.
i don’t think it’s that we can’t take it… i laugh at myself/my country all the time… i think we just lack seeing the joke at all as the first thing that comes to mind when someone says 3-way in a food context, is the spaghetti/chili/cheese combo we know as a 3-way.
it’s a bit different than a sign that clearly has screwed up english beyond any sort of recognizable sentence or phrase such as the “Please advice us if you live before the breakfast.” sign
IF you’re from the midwest. I’m an American (east coast) and had no idea a 3-way ever meant food. It’s like the people who knew “Hell” was a town’s name.
Their is a town named “Hell” in almost every state. It is a fairly common town name.
Sigh… ok so I lied. Michigan is the only state that has a town named Hell. I just didn’t want to feel bad that I was living in the state of Hell.

I’m in Michigan and have never heard of a food three way. A spaghetti/chili/cheese combo? What all mixed together? Yuck. Sounds almost as bad as pairing waffles and chicken.

Chicken and waffles are pretty good actually. its not like you wrap the chicken in the waffle and dip it into the syrup (although you can).

Clearly the weird- and awkward-ness comes in due to the fact that it is not, in fact, called chili on the sign. And clearly LOTS of people have never associated the phrase “three way” with food. I certainly never did – never heard of the stuff described in the comments here. Not everyone is from, has been to or knows folks in Cincinnati.

If you haven’t, then don’t complain when your preferences that you haven’t bothered to express properly get ignored.
Well said Ryan. And to those claiming a three-way is a ‘midwest’ food, I’ve lived all over these United States (except Ohio, Maine and Texas) and in Minnesota for the past 12. I’ve never heard of three-way in a food reference.

For my taste, plain old whacko use of English by english speakers is appropriate here.
This “Special of the Day” gave me a very good laugh. And the comments describing the food have given me a strange urge to make something like that.

This seems reasonable to me. And if you want to go it alone, $2 will suffice.
A three-way is a primarily Cincinnati food. It consists of spagetti (1), chili (2), and cheese(3). Adding beans or onions makes it a four-way and adding both, a five-way. No, it is not a midwestern food and the ‘chili’ really isn’t chili. It rarely sounds appealing to people who aren’t from around here, but if you grew up here, it’s a friggin’ staple of your diet. And you can get a three-way AND a drink for less than $6. So this is neither Engrish nor fail.
Sorry, but colloquialisms that sound sexual to us outsiders are still funny whether English in origin or not.
As I have traveled far and wide, I have actually encountered 3-ways outside of the greater Cincinnati area(inclusive of Lexington, Dayton and Columbus). I, in fact, once ate at a Skyline in St. Petersburg, Fl along the beach. And as I am a traveling minstrel, it was quite nice to enjoy a taste of home. While it may sound odd, it is actually quite good, though I don’t recommend attempting to make it with Texas-style chili, as that would not be a good thing.
There used to be a Skyline in the Newark airport, but I don’t think it’s there anymore.
It may not be an “Engrish” case but…and this is very important…does the $6 Three Way come with a beverage of some kind?

I don’t know what these people are yammering about, my dad always made us chili spaghetti, it was usually for lunch and not dinner..but it was just a can of chili thrown on some spaghetti with cheddar cheese…I didn’t know any different, my friends thought it was gross but it was delicious…and I’m from California.
We also made New England Chop Suey which was elbow macaroni, ground beef, onions and canned tomatoes. Best stuff, ever.
I’ll take the three way. only FFM of course…
