Yeah, it’s far from Asia. Though there’s quite a good Indian restaurant a little way across town (or was when I was there in ’98). Love St Andrews.

I recognized this as soon as I saw it – and have made fun of in it my days as a student at St Andrews. Double Dykes (another street name there) is far worse if you have a dirty mind, though.

Okay, quick question for the Scots – how is “Wynd” pronounced?

Is it like “a breeze”, or like “to coil something”?

Also, when I was visiting my da’s family in Wessex I saw two street signs that I sadly never got pictures of:

Butt Close (close to the above anyway)

and

Witt’s End
(heckuva place to work, I’d say)

Ireland and the UK are full of funny names (ironically since people speak English there). When I lived on Western Road in Cork the next road is Dyke Parade. I once made a list of funny Irish towns including Moanmore, Dingle, and Pass-if-you-can.

Where I grew up, in England, there’s a street called Butts Close.

Of course, “butts” refers to the old “archery butts”, i.e. a practice field for archers. Dunno if that’s the case with Butts Wynd.

It’s not Welsh, its Scots, as its in Scotland not Wales. Scots is a language closely related to English (some would say it is a dialect of English, but not me, I might get hurt)
