Hey I didn’t take it! If I had, I would have taken a picture of me holding the sign at Disneyland or something… maybe throwing up the horns, or holding it up behind Goofy while pinching my nose.
It’s not Welsh, its Scots, as its in Scotland not Wales. Scots is a language closely related to English (some would say it is a dialect of English, but not me, I might get hurt)
Its not really Engrish is it? I mean, there is an English Football Player (soccer for you yanks) named Nicky Butt and that is not funny… Whhhhaaaaaiiit, who am I trying to fool, it is _hilarious_ muhahahah!!!
Ireland and the UK are full of funny names (ironically since people speak English there). When I lived on Western Road in Cork the next road is Dyke Parade. I once made a list of funny Irish towns including Moanmore, Dingle, and Pass-if-you-can.
I recognized this as soon as I saw it – and have made fun of in it my days as a student at St Andrews. Double Dykes (another street name there) is far worse if you have a dirty mind, though.
Hey, I’ve been there!
(first)
I’ve smelt there
(second)
one day my cats vacationed there for a loooong time
(third)
Also, this is in St. Andrew’s, Scotland. Not quite Engrish…
Yeah, it’s far from Asia. Though there’s quite a good Indian restaurant a little way across town (or was when I was there in ’98). Love St Andrews.
Yep, definitely the good ‘bubble’ that is St Andrews, definitely not Engrish… Scots though and at least in Glasgow that’s pretty close.
I work opposite this sign! Or I did – someone pinched it off the wall…
Looks at Zak with an accusatory stare, hoping he will return the sign.

That would have been awesome.
You guys are correct, I took the pic in St. Andrews. I know, not exactly Engrish, but close enough I thought.
Well – isn’t Engrish about mis-translation, rather than funny place names? That would be the Fall From Dull site.
Far* not fall, sorry.
Is the interpretation of “butts wind” not a mis-translation of the name of the street? I think it qualifies.
It’s Welsh, but most people there speak English too. Not exactly the best choice for a street name.
Wales being in Scotland?
Geography fail

University of St Andrews FTW!!!!!
Definitely! Woot St. Andrews! I miss the bubble!
… I dunno how to see that sign, it looks like something I’d see on a bag of something called “chips of hanover” (snyder’s?)

Ah, good old St. Andrews. Me and my relatives always get a laugh from walking past it.
LOL, I’ve been laughing about this time since the first time I visited St Andrews lo these many years ago.
Where I grew up, in England, there’s a street called Butts Close.
Of course, “butts” refers to the old “archery butts”, i.e. a practice field for archers. Dunno if that’s the case with Butts Wynd.
There’s a place in England called “Marston Bigot” – has to be spoken about with a pronounced West Country accent – arr !
Yes, it is named after the archery butts and wynd is a scottish name for a lane or alley.
Oh man! I remember this exact sign from my band’s trip to Scotland. I still have a picture of a bunch of us pointing at it!

Dont forget Fecal !!!
Okay, quick question for the Scots – how is “Wynd” pronounced?
Is it like “a breeze”, or like “to coil something”?
Also, when I was visiting my da’s family in Wessex I saw two street signs that I sadly never got pictures of:
Butt Close (close to the above anyway)
and
Witt’s End
(heckuva place to work, I’d say)
It is pronounced “wind” as in to coil.
Not to be confused with the lovely little hamlet of Bishops Bottom
And Pratt’s Bottom in Kent, and Queen Camel in Somerset, and Anton’s Gowt, Mavis Enderby and Claxby Pluckacre in Lincolnshire…
It’s also close to Double Dykes Road
I live in St Andys now, but my old town also had a nice district simply named “The Butts”.
Ah St Andrews, my alma mater. I now live in Orkney where we have a place called Twatt
I knew a guy who’s last name was butts once. we always called him assman lol.
I recognized this as soon as I saw it – and have made fun of in it my days as a student at St Andrews. Double Dykes (another street name there) is far worse if you have a dirty mind, though.
HAHAHAHAHAHA My bus drives past this street on the way to my school every morning!!!
Oh the lulz.
horribly true, many people have been there.
